- AL> I need info on using a modem in Europe ( specifically Italy and
- AL> Germany )
-
- The Zoom WorldClass series offers different country configs from
- an init string:
-
- *NC000 United States
- *NC008 Italy
- *NC006 Germany
-
- If you can't find one of these models locally, you can either get
- one in Germany or try direct with ZoomTel in Boston:
- Sales -Toll Free 800-666-6191 9-6 Mon-Fri (Switchboard 8:30-6 EST)
- Sales -Toll Free 800-631-3116
- Fax- Sales 617-423-3923 24 hrs

- AL> What kind of throughput can I expect from a modem connection
- AL> between a foreign telco and here ( New York )?
-
- Depends on the total line capability between you and the remote
- Using V34 have achieved several 28k8 connects
- from London to many parts of the US. Your mileage may vary...
-
- AL> of problems will I face?
-
- Specific Information for Germany:
- --------------------------------
- Get an RJ11<->TAE-F and an RJ11<->TAE-N adapter cable in a German
- store. (TAE-F jacks are used for phones, TAE-N jacks for "non-phones".
- A modem is a "non-phone" and should operate from a N-type jack, but some
- places might only have F-type jacks available.)
-
- If tone dialing doesn't work, use pulse dialing. (10ppm, both US and
- UK make/break ratio should work.) BUSY detection will not work if
- you're calling from a line served by an electro-mechanical switch.
-
- Have no specific info for Italy
-
- AL> I want to set up a system that a
- AL> non-techie can use from a pay phone,
-
- Only if the payphone has a data jack. An acoustic coupler just wont
- cut the ice at high speed
-
- AL> hotel phone,
-
- Depending on the hotel's PBX, you may have to dial pulse first to get
- an outside line. ATDP9,DWT<number> where w is waits for dial tone, and
- , is pauses during dial (default 2 secs), 9 is to get an outside line
- You may not need the 2 sec pause, nor have to switch from pulse to tone
